About The Building

The Building is a cozy life-sim that runs right in your browser. You move into a cutaway apartment building – like a dollhouse with the front wall removed – and you get to know everyone who lives there.

The idea

Think of the best parts of living in an old apartment block: the doorman who knows everybody's name, the neighbor who always has the latest gossip, the party upstairs that runs a little too late, and the grandma who leaves cookies at your door. The Building turns those little moments into a small, living world you can drop into for five minutes or an evening.

The building has five residential floors with four apartments each, a lobby with a doorman desk, mailboxes and a laundry room, and a rooftop terrace where parties, workouts and painting sessions happen. Stairs and an elevator connect everything, and you can walk anywhere whose door is open.

Your home

When you arrive you create your character – name, look, outfit and a couple of personality traits – and you are handed the keys to a free apartment. From there you can furnish it tile by tile with beds, sofas, kitchens, plants, bookshelves, a bathtub and more, pick your floor and wall finishes, and decide whether your door is open to everyone, to friends only, or locked.

The residents

The building is never empty. Eleven residents live their own lives on a schedule tied to the in-game clock: Frank the doorman, Doris the gossip, Jake the party animal, grumpy Mr. Hoffman, hopeless romantic Lily, Max from the gym, Grandma Rose, Zoe the artist, Sam the nerd, and Nina & Leo, the couple whose ups and downs keep everyone talking. Each of them has needs, moods, routines and relationships that change as they meet each other – and you.

Residents always carry a Resident badge next to their name, so you can tell at a glance that they are part of the game and not other players.

The Building Gazette

Every friendship, feud, romance and rooftop party is written down in the building's event log, and the Building Gazette turns it into short, cheeky headlines. Check it after a break to catch up on what happened while you were away.

One clock for everyone

Time in the building is shared by the whole world. One in-game day lasts sixty real minutes and is calculated from universal time, so wherever you are, you see the same sunrise, the same breakfast in the lobby and the same rooftop party in the evening.

Where we are heading

Today The Building is a single-player prototype that saves your progress in your own browser. Next on the roadmap: real-time multiplayer so you can meet other people in the hallway, persistent apartments you can share with friends, public Gazette pages, and later a street, a café and a park connecting several buildings.

How it is made

Everything you see is generated in code from simple low-poly shapes using the open-source Three.js library – no downloaded models or textures. That keeps the game light enough to run on an average laptop or a mid-range phone.

The Building is free to play. In the future it will be supported by a small number of ads shown only in reserved spaces outside the game area, never on top of the game itself.
